Do you find collaboration with the transdisciplinary team a challenge at your school? Do you wish for teacher collaboration that results in authentic student agency?

We will unpack recent experiences at CWBS, where the music teacher, coordinator and homeroom teachers collaborated to facilitate opportunities for groups of Year 5 and Year 6 students to write and perform their own songs.

In a busy school it’s difficult to make time to plan for authentic transdisciplinary learning opportunities. We will show participants how we made it possible for close collaboration between coordinator, homeroom and music teachers, bringing the English and music classrooms together as one.

Drawing on writing skills, and harnessing the beauty of poetry and music, we will step participants through the songwriting process. Participants will also have the opportunity to create a song of their own.

Key Takeaways
  • Learn about the song writing adventures in Year 5 and Year 6 at CWBS, with examples of student songs and student testimonials.
  • Hear teacher reflection on how logistical difficulties were overcome to enhance the success of the transdisciplinary team and learner agency.
  • See how students worked collaboratively to write lyrics, then develop the chord progressions to accompany their lyrics.
  • Work together to write your own lyrics and (very simple) music.
