Everybody is talking about 'makerspaces', but what are they?

In this two hour workshop, we'll learn that makerspaces aren’t just areas for junk modelling, electronics or woodwork; nor D&T rebranded, or the latest education 'fad'...
Making is an integral part of successful inquiry teaching and the space for making can be anywhere - even the smallest classroom!

We will start from the beginning with the theory and practice of ‘making’ through the lens of the PYP. We’ll look at the different ways teachers can start up a makerspace, cultivating a maker mindset and how this can support all areas of the curriculum. There will be practical elements to the workshop, and teachers will leave with strategies and resources to use right away in their own setting.

Key Takeaways
  • Understand the importance of ‘making’ in teaching and learning as a way of supporting student agency.
  • Experience ways of ‘making’ which can be used across the curriculum.
  • Leave with strategies and tools to incorporate the principles of ‘making’ in their teaching area.
